Archbishop José H. Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles spent his Christmas day celebrating Mass for the inmates in one of the most restricted areas of LA Men’s Central Jail.
The Archbishop’s Mass at the prison was to give hope and spread the love of Christmas with the inmates who were spending the festive period away from their families.
According to Archbishop Gomez, Christmas is a period of joy and the manger reminds humanity of forgiveness.
“This is the joy of Christmas -the holy Child came to earth to save us all. May the light of the manger remind us that forgiveness is possible and darkness will not prevail” Archbishop Gomez noted.
The archbishop has celebrated Christmas Mass in the jail every year since 2011, continuing the tradition of his predecessor, Archbishop Roger Mahony.
