The Bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese has directed the diocese’s clergy, religious, and lay faithful to celebrate Memorial Masses in memory of the souls of two of the diocese’s departed bishops.
The directive from Most Rev. John Baptist Attakruh on Thursday, January 5, 2023, noted that the 13th and 12th of January 2023 will mark the 25th and 10th anniversaries of the death of Most Rev. Charles K. Sam and Most Rev. John Martin Darko, respectively.
Through his circular, he asked that a Memorial Mass be celebrated for the repose of their souls on Tuesday, 10th January 2023, in all parishes in the diocese. He also called for prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed bishops.
Most Rev. Charles Kweku Sam was the 2nd Bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese and served between 1981-1998 whereas Most Rev. John Martin Darko succeeded Most Rev. Charles Kweku Sam as the 3rd Bishop of the diocese and served between 1998-2011.
After the death of Bishop Charles Kweku Sam on 13th January 1998, Most Rev. John Martin Darko was ordained and installed as the Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi on 10th October 1998.
Most Rev. John Martin Darko served in this capacity until he resigned on health grounds on December 14, 2011, after his letter of resignation was accepted by the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI. He died on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at Our Lady of Grace Hospital in Breman Asikuma in the Central Region at the age of 67 after a long-drawn-out illness.
May he’s souls rest in peace
