For the first time a choir of deaf people will interpret the liturgical music at the central events of World Youth Day, organizers of the world event have announced.
A brief statement posted on the Facebook page of World Youth Day mentioned that a project dubbed “Hands That Sing” will see a group of person’s with hearing impairment join the WYD Lisbon 2023 Choir.
The Wolrd Youth Day organizers say the project is an attempt aimed at promoting the integration of listeners and non-listeners simultaneously in a choir.
The group of deaf singers have been rehearsing with the Lisbon 2023 Choir and engaged in several rehearsal activities on January 28 and 29 at the Rectory of the University of Lisbon.
Organizers are optimistic that the debut of the choir “Mãos que Cantam”, which will perform with the choir of listeners, interpreting in Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) the liturgical songs that will animate the main ceremonies of the World Youth Day.
World Youth Day 2023 will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, and was originally scheduled to be celebrated in the summer of 2022. This was announced by Pope Francis and Bishop Kevin Farrell at the end of the closing Mass of World Youth Day 2019 in Panama City, Panama
The celebrations will take place between Tuesday, August 1, 2023, and Sunday, August 6, 2023
