Pope Francis has announced the creation of the Catholic Diocese of Aguleri and subsequently appointed Bishop Denis Isizoh as the maiden Shepherd.
The Pope announced this on Sunday, February 12, 2023.
The new Catholic Diocese of Aguleri was carved from the Archdiocese of Onitsha, making it a suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Onitsha.
Before his appointment as the Chief Shepherd of Aguleri Diocese, Bishop Denis Isizo has been serving as the Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha and Titular Bishop of Legia.
Bishop Isizo was born in 1956 in Ogbunike in the Archdiocese of Onitsha. He had his philosophical studies at Bigard Memorial Seminary Ikot-Ekpene (now St. Joseph’s Seminary, Ikot-Ekpene) from 1976 to 1980. He equally studied Theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu from 1982 to 1985.
On September 28, 1985; he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Onitsha. Then on May 1, 2015, he was consecrated as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Onitsha Archdiocese.
About the Aguleri Diocese
The newly-erected diocese of Aguleria [Latin: Aguleriensis] is situated in south-east Nigeria, in the State of Anambra, including four Local Government Areas: Anambra West, Anambra East, Oyi and Ayamelum. The new ecclesiastical circumscription was dismembered from the archdiocese of Onitsha and made a suffragan of the same metropolitan see. The cathedral church of the new diocese will be the existing Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Aguleri.
