Catechists in the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, have been encouraged to look beyond the challenges of their vocation to making positive impacts in the lives of individuals and parishes they serve.
Addressing a gathering of Catechists at this year’s Catechists’ Day Celebration at the St. Bakhita Catholic Church, Lashibi-Accra, Archdiocesan president of the Catechists’ Association, Mr. Andrew Nana Gyan urged members to continue to give their all despite the challenges they face.
“I will exalt my fellow Catechists not to give up but rather work hard in your various stations and parishes to bring to fore the dignity of the vocation,” Mr. Gyan said.
Among several challenges faced by Catechists, the president highlighted financial constraints militating against the work of members.
Mr. Gyan also proposed specialized catechesis modules for different age groups, catering to the elderly, middle-aged, and youth, ensuring effective teaching methods for all. The need for teaching aids, often crucial in imparting knowledge, was underscored, urging that they be made available in parishes.
A standout proposal was the enhancement of welfare packages. Mr. Gyan suggested transforming the existing death welfare package into a life benefit scheme, advocating for Catechists’ Day appreciation at the parish level.
He noted that this practice, already embraced by some Dioceses, would serve as a gesture of recognition and gratitude from the parishioners.
Anticipating the future, the President unveiled an ambitious pilgrimage plan for next year. “It is our hope that we end our tenure of office next year 2024 with a pilgrimage to one of the biggest Basilicas in the world which is in Yamoussoukro Abidjan,” he said.
The address wrapped up with heartfelt appreciation extended to the Archdiocesan leadership, acknowledging their unwavering support and vision. “To the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, we say we love you so dearly and draw a lot of inspiration from you,” the president expressed.
He also conveyed gratitude to the Auxiliary Bishops of Accra, Directors, Chaplains, and colleague Catechists.
