The Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie has called upon all Churches in Accra to join hands in providing assistance to the victims of the recent Akosombo Dam spillage.
The call was made in a statement issued on October 20, emphasizing the need for solidarity and compassion during these challenging times.
In the statement, the Archbishop expressed the importance of emulating the early Church’s spirit of generosity, particularly in the city of Corinth, where collections were taken for Churches in need.
To this end, the Archbishop announced a special collection to be held this Sunday, October 22, 2023, for the benefit of those affected by the dam spillage.
The statement reads, “In the spirit of the generosity exhibited in the early Church in Corinth where collections were taken for Churches in need, I would like to make a passionate appeal to all Churches to take a second collection this Sunday, 22nd of October, 2023, in aid of the victims of the spillage from the Akosombo dam.”
To accommodate this special collection and ensure immediate assistance for the affected areas, the Exchange of Pulpit and Mission Sunday Collection, originally scheduled for October 22, have been postponed to the following Sunday, October 29, 2023.
The Archbishop stressed the urgency of the situation, stating, “Considering the urgency of the situation, I would like to plead with all Christ’s faithful to show massive support and generosity for the good of those whose lives and properties have been changed and destroyed by this unfortunate incident.”
Parish Priests and Priests In-charge have been instructed to ensure that all collected funds are forwarded to the Bursar’s Office by Monday, October 23, 2023. This prompt action will facilitate the immediate response to the needs of those affected by the dam spillage.
