Members of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference are expressing concern over the lack of substantial progress and development in the West African country despite 32 years of what was envisioned as a constitutional democracy.
Speaking ahead of the commencement of their 2023 Plenary Assembly in Sunyani, Most Rev. Mathew Gyamfi, President of the Conference said corruption has become as common as though it was legal in the country.
The President of the GCBC drew attention to the apparent disparity between the political elite and the general population, noting the swift accumulation of wealth by those in power. He criticized the prevalence of corruption, which he suggested was suffocating the nation and, in some cases, seemed to be legalized.
“It is clear to Ghanaians that the beneficiaries of the political system in place, are not the people but the politicians and the political actors and others in high positions. Ghanaians are witnesses to the accumulated wealth which those in power make in record time as soon as they entered politics. Ghanaians look on helplessly because those in authority are protected by the constitution to do what they do and they are never prosecuted because politicians protect their kind,” Bishop Gyamfi said.
