Catholic Bishops in Ghana have called for a review, if not a total change of the 1992 Constitution to that which works for all Ghanaians.
According to the Bishops, the current constitution of the country protects politicians carrying our corrupt practices instead of punishing them.
President of the Conference, Most Rev. Mathew Gyamfi, in an address in Sunyani on November 13, questioned why the country is yet to implement findings of the Constitutional Review Committee.
Bishop Gyamfi lamented that instead of apologizing for their wrong deeds, some politicians defend acts of corruption with impunity and arrogance.
A development he argues making a constitutional review in the country expedient.
“It is clear to Ghanaians that the beneficiaries of the political system in place, are not the people but the politicians and the political actors and others in high positions. Ghanaians are witnesses to the accumulated wealth which those in power make in record time as soon as they entered politics. Ghanaians look on helplessly because those in authority are protected by the constitution to do what they do and they are never prosecuted because politicians protect their kind,” Bishop Gyamfi said.
The Bishop also called for a revamp of the legal system to more effectively combat corruption.
