The Catholic community in Togo is grieving the loss of His Excellency Philippe Fanoko Kpodzro, Archbishop Emeritus of Lomé, whose passing has been confirmed by the Conference of Bishops of Togo.
The retired Archbishop is said to have died in Sweden.
His death was confirmed in a statement released by the Episcopal Conference of Togo, signed by Bishop Benoît Alowonou, Bishop of Kpalimé on January 9.
The statement read, “On the morning of January 9, 2024, the news of the death of H.E. Mgr Philippe Fanoko Kpodzro, Archbishop Emeritus of Lomé, reached the Conference of Bishops of Togo. While waiting to provide information on his funeral, the Conference of Bishops of Togo invites us to pray that the Lord will welcome him into his kingdom.”
Having retired in 2007, Archbishop Kpodzro emerged a symbol of opposition in Togo. He ardently condemned dictatorship, mismanagement, embezzlement of public funds, human rights violations, and staunchly championed the cause of freedom and democracy.
