The Lepers Aid Committee Ghana is set to mark this year’s World Leprosy Day tomorrow, January 28.
The event is expected to see a ceremony that will be the beginning of a building project that will bring into existence a functional kitchen that will provide food for inmates of the Weija Leprosarium in Ghana.
The initiative has the support of Ghana’s Vice President, His Excellency Mahamudu Bawumia among other benefactors.
Since 1977 Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell, SVD, now a retired missionary priest, has been helping to solicit funds to improve the lives of Cured lepers in Weija, Ho, Ankaful, Kokofu, Nkanchina and other leprosy settlements in the Upper West region of Ghana.
World Leprosy Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of every January.
The theme for the 2024 edition is “Beat Leprosy”. This theme encapsulates the dual objectives of the day: to eradicate the stigma associated with leprosy and to promote the dignity of people affected by the disease.
The theme also serves as a reminder of the need to address the social and psychological aspects of leprosy, alongside the medical efforts to eliminate the disease.
It calls for a world where leprosy is no longer a source of stigma but rather an opportunity to demonstrate compassion and respect for all individuals.
