St. Bakhita Catholic Church, situated in Lashibi, Ghana, is poised to commemorate its 19th anniversary on Sunday, February 11, 2024, with an additional reason for celebration as it is on the verge of being elevated to parish status by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp, Metropolitan Archbishop of the Accra Archdiocese.
Founded on the principles of love, charity, and unity, St. Bakhita Catholic Church draws inspiration from its patron saint, Bakhita, and has emerged as a dynamic and rapidly growing community within the Accra Archdiocese. Originally established in 2005 as an out-station of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Sakumono, the church has experienced remarkable growth, now boasting a membership exceeding 1,000 faithful.
The vibrant spirit of St. Bakhita Catholic Church is evident in its active choir and brass band, dedicated children’s service, and robust engagement with the youth. Members of the church are deeply committed to serving both the faithful and the wider community through various ministries, societies, and day groups.
The impending elevation of St. Bakhita Catholic Church to parish status marks a significant milestone in its journey. From its humble beginnings as an outstation, the church has steadily expanded its influence and impact, earning recognition within the local Catholic community.
Speaking to Catholic Trends ahead of the celebrations, Rev. Fr. Hillary Agbenosi, who is the Rector of the church, noted that the anniversary celebrations and the elevation of the church to a parish are great news for the community.
He highlighted that the faithful of the church are constantly reminded of the virtues of St. Bakhita. He recalled the situation of St. Bakhita, whose circumstances did not deter her from encountering God.
Fr. Agbenosi also took the opportunity to express gratitude to all the individuals, groups, and associations who have worked hard over the years to bring the church to its current status.
Preparations for the anniversary and parish elevation have been underway, with a series of activities and programs marking the significance of this occasion for St. Bakhita Catholic Church and its congregation.
With a steadfast commitment to their mission and a dedication to serving as beacons of Christ’s love and compassion, the members of St. Bakhita Catholic Church look forward to embracing their new status as a parish and continuing their journey of faith and service.
