In order to restore confidence in the electoral system, Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) should remain an unbiased umpire, per the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC).
In their 2024 Lenten message addressed to the Catholic faithful and all Ghanaians, the bishops urged the EC to “conduct free, fair and transparent elections” by paying attention to concerns raised by citizens of the West African country.

The Jean Adukwei Mensa-led Electoral Commission was also asked to pay attention to some of the political parties with regard to their reforms in the forthcoming general elections, especially on the use of indelible ink.
In the statement released on Tuesday, February 12, 2024, the Bishops also appealed to all political parties to respect the independence of the EC and cooperate with the commission to enable free, fair, and transparent elections.
Furthermore, Ghanaians were also asked to vote conscientiously in the elections. The Bishops also advised against “vote-buying and vote-selling syndromes.”
The Bishops stated, “We should exercise our franchise conscientiously during the elections. We should eschew the vote-buying and vote-selling syndromes.”
Placing emphasis on the digital age where every individual can afford to be a journalist, the members of the GCBC urged citizens to put to good use the social media platforms, mobile phones and the internet made available to them.
“These devices are not to be used to fuel hate and violent speeches, but to promote peace, truth, and justice in view of a better Ghana”, the Ghanaian Bishops said.
