The University of Cape Coast (UCC)n-Local IMCS Pax Romana choir under the Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Catholic Chaplaincy is gearing up for a memorial musical concert for the late Rev. Bro. Pius Agyeman, SVD.
The program themed, Embracing Contentment and Leading others to Christ through Music, will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Catholic Chaplaincy, UCC.
Bro. Pius was born on September 3,1944, and passed away on July 26, 2021, at the University Hospital of Bonn, Germany. As a Religious he greatly contributed to various pastoral ministries including vocation, liturgy and sacred music and the promotion of the inculturation.
In the year 1971, he was sent to Nigeria by the SVD Provincial Superior with two others, Rev. Bro. Jerome Agbeko and the late Rev. Bro. Paul Ayi to study at the Christ the Servant Formation Center in Ibadan, Nigeria to be trained as Formators.
It was there that he was able to convince All African Religious Congregations both international and local in the city of Ibadam to form an Indegenous West African Religious Union (IWARU). When he returned to Ghana, by the Grace of God, he was able to form a branch of the Union (IWARU) which is now called (ARUG) African Religious Union, Ghana. In the year 1973, he gained admission to the National Academy of Music (Winneba) where he specialised in Music in General and African Music in particular.
Rev. Bro. Pius Agyemang, SVD, organized seminars, workshops and formed many choirs. He worked with Rev. Fr. Charles Schneider, SVD, who taught him homiletics (how to write talks, homily and how to preach).
He formed the Youth Singers and Dramatists (CAYOSINDRA) commonly called (CAYO). Bro. Pius was very instrumental to the formation of the Greater Accra Catholic Church Choirs Association (GACCCA). In 1979, he went to Rome (Nemi) for a special SVD renewal course in Scripture, Theology, Liturgy and many other subjects. He was later transferred to Koforidua to assume duty as the Vocations Director for the SVD.
In the year 1985, Rev. Bro. Pius ended his assignment as the Vocations Director, and the late Bishop James Owusu of Sunyani approached his Superior to contract Bro. Pius to handle Music and Liturgy in Sunyani Diocese. He was released to the Bishop and he stayed at St. James Seminary where he also taught Music and Liturgy.
He formed the Youth Singers and Dramatists (CAYOSINDRA) commonly known as (CAYO), and was also very instrumental in the formation of the Greater Accra Catholic Church Choirs Association (GACCCA), in the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra among others.
