Former Deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Alex Kyeremeh has lamented the slow pace in the growth of Ghana’s Lumen Christi TV project.
According to him, it is unfortunate that the Catholic Church in Ghana has not been able to do what in his words, “one-man churches” are accomplishing with ease as far as media evangelisation is concerned.
Hon. Kyeremeh argued that he is getting attracted to Assemblies of God TV due to the space created by the absence of content from the National Catholic Television Project.

He is of the view that Lumen Christi TV should be available on platforms like Multi TV where almost all households if not all, can access it.
He opined that Catholics would pay for the subscription once they see progress with the project, describing the current state of the project as a talk shop with very little action.
Test transmission of Lumen Christi TV commenced in September 2022. The Ghanaian Catholic TV Channel was expected to broadcast content across Ghana and beyond Africa when in full operations.
But, over a year after the commencement of test transmission. The station is yet to begin any serious business.
A national launch was preceded by Diocesan-level launch across the country.
The Bono Regional Minister, Madam Justine Owusu Banahene, at one of such events, called on the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCBC) to use their TV station “LUMEN CHRISTI TV” to project the image of Christ.
She recounted that the Catholic Schools were among the discipline schools in the country unlike today.
She said factors for the degeneration of the youth in society and the corruption of the mind of a large number of youngsters as well as the unprecedented decline in moral values and ethics in today’s youth are as a result of negative influences of the mass media.
LC TV has its head office in Accra and is expected to have 20 bureaus in all the Dioceses and a Vicariate under their respective Diocesan Departments of Social Communications (DEPSOCOM).
Checks by Catholic Trends indicate that the plan was to have the various DEPSOCOM offices feed Lumen Christi with content. Be that as it may, the majority of these DEPSOCOM offices struggle to provide live streaming of Diocesan events, with some streaming with handheld phones.
At the 2023 Plenary Assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Ghana in Sunyani, President of the Conference, Most Rev. Mathew Gyamfi emphasized the crucial role of media in evangelization in the modern world.
He highlighted the inadequacy of Catholic content in the media landscape and called for urgent investment in traditional and social media.
We must re-orient ourselves to the urgency of investing in media – Bishop Gyamfi
Bishop Gyamfi expressed concern about the limited presence of Catholic content in the media, emphasizing that Catholics, especially the youth, are exposed not only to the teachings of the Catholic Church but also to the messages of other religious sects and tele-evangelists.
This exposure, he noted, sometimes leads Catholics to switch their allegiance to these new faiths.
