The Bishop of Ho Diocese and Vice President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev Emmanuel Kofi Fianu S.V.D has called on Catholics in Ewe-speaking Dioceses in Ghana to always use traditional and authentic and Catholic hymns in the Dzifomor during liturgical celebrations and other church events.
He expressed concerns about the increasing influence of Pentecostal and charismatic songs, which he believes are overshadowing the traditional hymns in the Ewe language.
Bishop Fianu made the call at the maiden edition of the Ho Township Easter Feast showcasing Ewe Catholic Songs.
He urged the music Directorate of the Diocese to delve into the theological meanings of the songs used in church services.
He encouraged Catholics to actively participate by bringing the Dzifomor to liturgical celebrations, emphasizing the value of these traditional hymns.
The event held at the Ola Senior High School Auditorium saw the Ho township Catholic Choirs and Evangelical Presbyterian Church Choir from Elorm Parish, Ho Bankoe treat the audience with their musical prowess to the admiration of all.
The Diocesan Director of Music, Rev. Fr. Dennis Kuma Asare, underscored the purpose of the Easter Feast in reviving the essence of singing authentic Catholic hymns during liturgical gatherings.
He expressed concern over the emergence of various music genres in the church that do not align with the true spirit of Catholic liturgy. Fr. Asare urged all members to attend liturgical events with the Dzifomor to support the choir in offering melodious hymns for the glorification of the Lord.
