The Archdiocese of Castries has issued a statement of intervention in response to the unfolding crisis in Grenada.
Archbishop Gabriel Malzaire, deeply saddened by the discord within the Church, has called for unity and adherence to the established hierarchy.
“The series of errant actions…has brought disrepute to the Church and immeasurable hurt to the faithful,” Archbishop Malzaire lamented, addressing the situation following the annual Chrism Mass on March 27th, 2024.
The heart of the matter revolves around the status of Bishop Clyde Martin Harvey, the appointed Bishop of the Diocese of St. George’s-in-Grenada. Despite submitting his resignation upon reaching the age of 75, Pope Francis requested him to remain in his role until a new Bishop is chosen. This decision has sparked controversy and resistance within the Church.
“Any objection to such instruction must follow the requisite internal processes of enquiry and resolution,” emphasized Archbishop Malzaire, stressing the importance of adhering to Church policies and Canon Law.
Fr. Gerard Paul’s suspension has further fueled tensions, prompting Archbishop Malzaire to invite him to voice any objections or complaints. However, he underscored the necessity of respecting due process in addressing grievances.
The Archbishop concluded his statement with a call to prayer, urging the faithful in Grenada to unite in supplication for their bishop, clergy, and lay members. Despite the current turmoil, he expressed hope for a renewed sense of Christian community in Grenada.
