The Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana has announced that His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr. Francis Bomansaan, M.Afr, as the new bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Wa. The announcement was made at midday today, Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024, in the Vatican and released by Rev. Monsignor Maher Chammas, Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature.
Fr. Bomansaan, born on January 19th, 1962, is a member of the Missionaries of Africa (also known as the White Fathers), the same congregation to which the late bishop, Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr, belonged. He took his final oath with the society in 1990 and was ordained as a priest on July 27th, 1991.
His extensive experience includes serving as Vice Superior General of the Missionaries of Africa in Rome, Italy, since 2022. Previously, he managed the Bethany Centre, a recovery center for priests and religious individuals, and was Novice Master at the International English Speaking Novitiate in Kasama, Zambia. He also held roles as Provincial Superior for the Ghana/Nigeria Province and Vocation Director in Tamale, Ghana.
Fr. Bomansaan’s education includes studies in psycho-spiritual counseling and addiction recovery in Chicago, spirituality and spiritual accompaniment in Liverpool, and religious formation and leadership in Dublin.
Fr. Bomansaan’s appointment is seen as a continuation of the legacy left by Cardinal Baawobr, bringing hope for renewed leadership and growth in the Diocese of Wa, which has been without a bishop since the cardinal’s passing in November 2022.
