Pope Francis has sanctioned a miracle attributed to Blessed Carlo Acutis, the technologically adept Italian teenager beatified in Assisi in 2020.
The development opens the path for Carlo’s elevation to sainthood, celebrating his deep reverence for the Eucharist.
The Press Office of the Holy See disclosed today, May 23, that Pope Francis will convene a Consistory—yet to have a confirmed date—during which Carlo Acutis, alongside Blessed Giuseppe Allamano, Marie-Léonie Paradis, and Elena Guerra, will ascend to sainthood.
In 1991, the advent of the World Wide Web heralded a technological breakthrough with far-reaching implications for humanity.
Coincidentally, in the same year, Carlo Acutis, a young boy from Italy, was born, destined to harness this revolutionary technology to profoundly influence others’ lives.
At the tender age of eleven, he curated a website chronicling Eucharistic miracles, blending his technical prowess with fervent faith.
Courtney Mares, Journalist and author of “Blessed Carlo Acutis: A Saint in Sneakers,” elucidated, “Carlo didn’t comprehend why some peers lacked his level of understanding and devotion to the Eucharist. He questioned why people queued for soccer games or concerts but not to witness the Blessed Sacrament. For two years, Carlo collaborated with his family to unveil an exhibition on Eucharistic miracles worldwide, premiering during the year of the Eucharist declared by Pope John Paul II.”
Antonia Salzano, Carlo Acutis’ mother, recalled how after receiving his first communion at age 7, Carlo never missed an opportunity to partake in the Eucharist, drawing strength for a life of integrity. His profound connection with Christ fortified him to accept his terminal diagnosis of leukemia, delivered unexpectedly by his physician.
Antonia shared with EWTN, “When Carlo was informed about his leukemia diagnosis and the possibility of death, he smiled and referred to it as ‘The Lord giving him a beautiful alarm clock,’ signaling his time had come. He reassured me, ‘I won’t come out of this alive, but Mom, I’ll give you many signs, don’t worry.'”
On Oct. 10, 2020, the young Italian was beatified at a special Mass in the city of Assisi, putting the late teenager just one step away from sainthood. It allowed Catholics to venerate him as “Blessed Carlo Acutis.” Acutis died of leukemia in 2006, at the age of 15.
After his death, townspeople began to attribute miracles to his intercession, including the birth of twins to his own mother four years after his death.
His case was submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, one of the offices that make up the papal administrative structure – the Curia – of the Catholic Church. It initiated the process of his official canonization in the Roman Catholic Church.
