In a powerful display of devotion, hundreds of Ugandans and pilgrims from other parts of the world embarked on a symbolic pilgrimage, dubbed the “Walk of Faith,” from the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine to the St. Matia Mulumba Parish in Old Kampala earlier today.
The 12-kilometer journey commemorates the martyrdom of the Uganda Martyrs, a group of 45 Christians who were executed in the late 19th century for their refusal to renounce their faith.
Today’s pilgrimage precedes the 60th anniversary of the canonisation of the Martyrs of Uganda on June 3, a significant event in the country’s religious history. The “Walk of Faith” is a reenactment of the martyrs’ final journey, which has become an important tradition for Ugandan Catholics.
Pilgrims from all walks of life, including clergy, boy scouts, traffic policemen, and the elderly, participated in the walk. Many of the faithful carried banners bearing the names of their respective dioceses, while others chanted and sang hymns as they made their way through the 12-kilometer route.
The pilgrimage began at the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, where the first two martyrs, St. Denis Ssebugwawo and St. Andrew Kaggwa, were persecuted in 1886. From there, the pilgrims proceeded to the St. Matia Mulumba Parish in Old Kampala, stopping at various sites along the way where other martyrs were killed.
