The announcement was carried in an official communique of the Society dated June 14, 2024 and signed by the Secretary General of the Society, Fr. André-L. Simonart,
According to the communique, the announcement comes after a rigorous consultation process involving all Provincial Superiors and General Officials, as stipulated in the Society’s Constitutions and Laws.
Father Ssekamatte’s election comes as a result of the vacancy created by the appointment of Fr. Francis Bomansaan as the Bishop of Wa in Ghana by Pope Francis on May 22. With this transition, Father Ssekamatte will now step into the crucial role of General Assistant, bringing his wealth of experience and leadership from his tenure in Eastern Africa to the global stage.
“Following on the consultation of all Provincial Superiors and of the General Officials as laid down in the Society’s Constitutions and Laws, article n° 215 § 1, the General Council has elected Father Aloysius Ssekamatte General Assistant replacing Father Francis Bomansaan appointed Bishop of Wa in Ghana by Pope Francis,” the statement said.
