Associate Director of Diversity and International Programmes at Ashesi University, Dr. Millicent Adjei Togo, has said the Church in Accra is demonstrating the value it places on the contributions of young people with its Youth Congress initiative while urging young people not to take the opportunity for granted.
Addressing the opening of the 2024 Accra Archdiocesan Youth Congress at St. Paul’s Seminary on June 27, Dr. Adjei Togo emphasised the profound value of youth contributions within the Church.
In her keynote speech, Dr. Adjei Togo articulated the significance of youth voices in redefining their relationship with Jesus and their surroundings.
“While I hope to give you some gentle reminders on the chosen topic, on things you already know, the real work is going to be done by you our youth gathered here today who throughout this congress have the mandate of helping the church reimagine what else we can do to get you better connected to Jesus and present to others and your surroundings. By centering your voices and listening to what you bring to the table, the church is demonstrating to you how much your contributions are valued. I hope you recognize this and don’t take this responsibility lightly,” She said.
She urged attendees to recognize the Church’s commitment to valuing their perspectives and contributions, stressing the importance of their role in shaping the future of Catholic youth ministry.
Drawing from Pope Francis’ exhortation in Christus Vivit, Dr. Togo highlighted the transformative potential of youth as a vital stage in spiritual growth. She acknowledged the challenges and uncertainties faced by today’s youth, urging them to deepen their connection with Jesus as a source of guidance and strength.
“The youth hold a unique place in Jesus’s ministry,” Dr. Adjei Togo remarked, referencing biblical figures such as Samuel, King David, and Mary, whose steadfast faith exemplified the essence of youthful dedication.
She outlined practical steps for nurturing this spiritual connection, advocating for moments of solitude and mindfulness amidst the hustle of modern life. She encouraged attendees to embrace their Catholic faith as a pathway to personal growth and community service.
Highlighting the urgency of youth engagement, Dr. Adjei Togo called on participants to actively share their faith through compassionate action and service. She emphasized the interconnectedness of humanity, urging a collective effort in building a stronger, more inclusive Church community.
The 2024 Accra Archdiocesan Youth Congress sets a forward-thinking agenda for empowering young Catholics in Accra.
