In a bid to enhance the engagement of lay faithful within the Catholic Church, the Ghana federation of Pax Romana has petitioned the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference to open up seminary formation to the laity.
The move according to the the student group will broaden theological education opportunities for the laity.
The call was made in a petition presented to the Episcopal Conference of Ghana as part of the federation’s activities during its 75th Anniversary Celebration on June 29.
The petition, presented at the National Catholic Secretariat, emphasizes the need for lay faithful to participate more actively in theological studies, including areas such as theology, bible studies, and catechesis.
“Seminary formation should be opened up to lay faithful in areas of theology, the bible and catechesis. The seminaries should run short courses in these areas during vacations for lay faithful,” the petition said.
The call comes amidst challenges faced by Catholic students in tertiary institutions, including a lack of pastoral care and logistical constraints in chaplaincies.
The Federation believes that opening seminary courses to lay faithful would empower them to contribute more effectively to the Church’s mission and address contemporary spiritual needs.
