As part of activities to mark the first anniversary of the St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Society of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cathedral, Donkorkrom, some twenty-one new members have been initiated into the Society and a new branch opened at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Adeemra in the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom.
The initiation of new members was part of a 3-day program whose peak was on Sunday 7th July 2024 at the Cathedral. Other activities to mark the anniversary included the inauguration of a new branch of the St. Theresa Society at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Adeemra on 6th July, as well as fasting and thanksgiving prayers for the Society. Prior to this, there was Thanksgiving Mass and visitation of the Presbyterian Orphanage in Donkorkrom on July 1st, exactly one year after the inauguration of the Society.
In an interview with the writer, Opanin Genevieve Dakurah, President of the St. Theresa Society of the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, she expressed joy for the growth in membership of the Society, stemming not only from the Cathedral but also from the newly inaugurated branch in one of the Parishes:
“We were able to initiate 9 new members from Adeemra, and 12 new ones from the Cathedral, making a total of 21 in all,” she said “and this brings the whole group to about 80 members in all,” she added.
According to Opanin Dakurah, the Motto of the Society is ‘Service to God and Mankind’ and their aim is:
‘‘to help missionary work, to help in the upkeep of our priests, help the widows, the orphans and the needy,’’ she underlined. That is why, she continued, ‘‘as part of our anniversary, we decided to go and make a donation to the orphanage, to the church and to the priests to help with their upkeep and materials to help with the cleaning of the church’’.
The President further shared the hope that they may one day become autonomous:
‘‘It is our hope that we should be able to move to other parishes in the Vicariate to spread the St. Theresa Society, to help us to also stand autonomous from the Koforidua Archdiocese, who have come in to organise the initiation and inauguration ceremony for us,’’ she averred.
The initiation and Inauguration ceremonies were facilitated by Opanin Assan Veronica, Archdiocesan President of the St. Theresa Society and Opanin Grace, Vice Archdiocesan President of the Society, who came all the way from Koforidua, the Mother Archdiocese of the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom.
During the Sunday Mass which was presided over by Rev. Fr. Bernard Appiah Adjei, SVD, Cathedral Administrator of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cathedral, the newly initiated members, were commissioned into the Society of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus. All the members did a special offertory, as well as a donation to the priests and some cleaning materials for the church.
