Ahead of Ghana’s general elections in December, which will see the country elect a new president and members of parliament, the Northern Regional Minister has stressed the need for peaceful and violence-free polls. His comments come amidst ongoing efforts to promote peace and security leading up to the elections.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by a representative from the Northern Regional Coordinating Council at the 10th National Sacred Heart of Jesus Congress in Tamale, the Minister, Hon. Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, called for prayers to ensure a peaceful electoral process, emphasizing the importance of God’s intervention in maintaining unity and harmony during this critical period.
“I believe and hope this conference will make the forthcoming elections a prayer point for the intervention of the Almighty God to ensure a peaceful and violence-free election,” the Minister urged.
Hon. Shaibu also commended the Catholic Church for its continued contributions to peacebuilding and development in Ghana. “I want to commend the Catholic Church for building and maintaining a very cordial relationship with the Government,” he said. “The Church’s role in fostering religious diversity and unity has been crucial for peaceful coexistence among various religious groups.”
He further highlighted the Church’s significant development efforts across the country, especially in Tamale and the Northern Region, in areas such as health, education, and agriculture. “The Church’s projects in Tamale and the Northern Region are evidence of its commitment to development,” he noted.
Concluding his remarks, the Northern Regional Minister pledged the support of the Regional Coordinating Council for the Church’s work and extended his best wishes for the success of the conference. “May the Almighty God accept our prayers and grant our individual aspirations and that of the country at large,” he concluded.
