President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Gyamfi has emphasised the need for Catholic youth to prioritise the Church above their individual societies for the unity and growth of the Church in Ghana.
He noted that members and leaders of the various youth groups must not love their respective societies more than the Church.
The Bishop said this in an address at the closing ceremony of the Ghana National Catholic Youth Council (GHANCYC) 50th Anniversary and the 5th Ghana World Youth Day in Sunyani.
Bishop Gyamfi’s call for unity and collaborative ministry was central to the anniversary celebrations themed “GHANCYC @50: Fostering the Growth of the Catholic Youth through Collaborative Ministry and Shaping Peaceful Elections.”
He urged the youth to focus on a shared mission rather than individual group loyalties, stressing that a unified approach is essential for the Church’s growth and effectiveness.
The Bishop reflected on the significance of the anniversary, noting that “GHANCYC has been a beacon of hope for five decades, empowering Catholic youth to become active agents of change and transformation in the Church and society.”
He also encouraged the youth to act as ambassadors of peace, promoting respectful dialogue and understanding in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections.
For his part, the National Youth Chaplain, Rev. Fr James Bour-Mensah, called for a renewed commitment to the growth and development of the Catholic youth indicating that the youth of the church need to promote peace, justice and integrity in the upcoming general elections and stand firm in their faith and upholding the values of the gospel as their civic duties.
