President of the Ghana Catholic Bishop’s Conference, Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi has called on Catholic youth in Ghana to remain discerning and not be swayed by the enticing promises of prophets and tele-evangelists.
He emphasised the importance of engaging deeply with the Catholic Church’s teachings, reading the catechism, and spreading the Church’s faith.
“The youth are important to the church and must be guided through the various teachings and encyclical of Pope Francis,” he said.
Bishop Gyamfi made this known during the closing ceremony of the 50th Anniversary of the Ghana National Catholic Youth Council (GHANCYC) and the 5th Ghana Version of World Youth Day.
Bishop Gyamfi highlighted the significant role of youth in the Church, advocating for their guidance through various teachings and Pope Francis’ encyclicals.
The celebration, themed “GHANCYC@50; Fostering the Growth of Catholic Youth through Collaborative Ministry and Shaping Peaceful Election,” saw the participation of youth from across the country’s ArchDioceses and Vicariate.
For his part, Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom and Episcopal co-chairman for Laity and Youth, Most Rev. John Aphonse Asiedu, SVD , called on the youth of the Church to protect the interest of the youth in this year’s general election.
“This year is an election year for Ghana and as youth of the Church, you have it as your duty to educate and encourage the populace to elect good and visionary leaders who have the goodwill to shape the present and the future destiny of our country. This duty, you are called to execute with all seriousness and in sincerity, yet in a peaceful manner and with respect to human dignity,” Bishop Asiedu said.
Sir Prof. Elias N.K. Sowley, National Chairman for the Catholic Laity Council also urged the youth to resist the temptation of unhealthy practices for temporary financial and material gains. He called on the youth of the church to exemplify Catholic virtues in all their actions before, during, and after the elections.
