The Ghana Police Service has announced that adequate security measures have been put in place ahead of the Environmental Prayer Walk, organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious Congregations in Ghana.
The prayer walk, set for Friday, 11th October 2024, aims to rally Catholics to demand urgent governmental action against illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, which have led to widespread environmental degradation across the nation.
According to the Police, the walk will begin at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Adabraka and will pass through key areas, including Castle Road, Ridge, and the AU Roundabout, before concluding at Christ the King Catholic Church. “The Ghana Police Service wishes to inform the general public that sufficient security measures have been put in place,” emphasized Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs.
The statement further noted that “given the route, there will be temporary traffic disruptions in the affected areas.”
Motorists and the public are urged by the Police to cooperate with traffic management efforts to ensure smooth proceedings during the event.
Prior to this, the organizers held a press conference, advising participants to follow all security and safety protocols during the walk. They also warned individuals against using the event as an opportunity to cause disruptions or incite trouble.
