Pope Francis is set to unveil his fourth encyclical, titled “Dilexit Nos” (He Loved Us), on October 24.
The document arrives amid profound global challenges, including war, social and economic disparities, rampant consumerism, and technological advancements that threaten the essence of human nature.
The Vatican Press Office confirmed the full title, “Dilexit Nos – Encyclical Letter on the Human and Divine Love of the Heart of Jesus Christ,” on October 21.
The Pope previously indicated his intent to publish this encyclical during his general audience on June 5, emphasizing its aim to encourage a shift in perspective and invite humanity to rediscover what truly matters: the heart.
In his announcement, Pope Francis expressed hope that the encyclical would reflect on the Lord’s love and illuminate the path toward ecclesial renewal, resonating with a world that appears to have lost its heart.
He noted that the text would draw upon previous magisterial teachings and the rich tradition of Scripture, reintroducing the Church to this spiritually significant devotion.
The release of “Dilexit Nos” coincides with the ongoing celebrations marking the 350th anniversary of the first appearance of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1673. These apparitions emphasized Christ’s love, particularly towards sinners, and initiated a mission to spread this message, symbolized by the heart surrounded by flames and a crown of thorns.
The encyclical also follows a historical tradition of promoting devotion to the Sacred Heart, including Pope Pius XII’s 1956 encyclical “Haurietis Aquas,” which sought to revitalize this devotion during a period of decline. Pope Benedict XVI reaffirmed this importance, stating that the mystery of God’s love is central to true Christian spirituality.
