The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has issued a strong rebuke to the country’s political leadership, accusing them of fostering corruption and division at a time when national unity and trust in government are urgently needed.
In a statement released on November 14, the Bishops condemned the escalating political infighting and corruption that has undermined the public’s confidence in the government.
“The massive greed we are witnessing is shocking and heartbreaking,” the statement reads, as the bishops outlined their deep concern over the current political climate. Despite ongoing calm in the streets, the Bishops warned that anxiety is growing among ordinary Kenyans, and trust in the government is rapidly eroding.
The KCCB pointed to the persistent political wrangling within the government, which has not only deepened divisions but also created an environment of mistrust among citizens and even among those in power. “The political wrangles in the Government have generated unwarranted tensions and deepened divisions among our people,” the Bishops said.
The statement went further to highlight the growing concern over the culture of corruption and self-interest that has taken root among elected leaders. Despite the country’s significant political and economic challenges, the Bishops stressed that many leaders continue to pursue personal gains at the expense of the public good.
“We are troubled by their heightened insensitivity and irresponsibility in carrying out their tasks,” the Bishops stated, calling out the leaders for being “captured and compromised in corrupt deals.”
