Pope Francis has appointed Father Iyad Twal as the new auxiliary bishop of the patriarchal diocese of Jerusalem for Latins in Jordan and titular bishop of Siminia, a position vacant for two years.
The announcement, made on December 17, was welcomed by Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, who expressed gratitude to the Pope and urged prayers for the new bishop-elect, who will also serve as patriarchal vicar for Jordan.
Cardinal Pizzaballa praised Father Twal for his years of service in priestly ministry and noted that he is now called to teach, govern, and sanctify the people of God in this new role.
Born in Amman, Jordan, Father Twal, 51, was ordained a priest in 1998 after studying at the Latin Patriarchate Seminary.
Over the years, he has held significant positions, including parish priest in Birzeit and Zababdeh, director of the Latin Patriarchate schools in Israel and Palestine, and professor at Bethlehem University.
He currently serves as executive vice president of the university’s department of humanities and religious studies. The date and location of Father Twal’s episcopal consecration have yet to be confirmed.
