A priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra-Ghana, Rev. Fr. Ebenezer Hanson, has said the West African nation has two major enemies found in and out of the country.
In a Facebook post shared on January 8, 2025, the Ghanaian priest argued that the United States of America and its allies (one of the enemies identified) are manipulating the nation’s government through their influence fueled by the selfishness of Ghanaian leaders.
He added that religious leaders, (the second group of major enemies he identified) instead of offering guidance, are stoking division and fear for political gain.
“I am convinced beyond doubt that there are two major enemies of Ghana, one is foreign while the other is local,” he wrote, making a bold claim about the country’s leadership struggles.
According to Fr. Hanson, the “foreign enemy” is the United States and its allies, who he believes indirectly influence Ghana’s government.
“The foreign enemy is US and her allies who control our governments indirectly, while capitalising on our leaders’ selfishness,” he asserted, suggesting that external powers have found a way to manipulate local leadership for their own benefit.
“While the country is facing so many challenges, instead of dispelling the smoke of fear and anxiety in leaders and citizens, we load worse and thicker sooth of darkness in their eyes in order for them to vote for our favourite politician,” he said, expressing disappointment at the role some religious figures play in fuelling political division.
Rev. Fr. Hanson went on to criticise religious leaders who openly support specific political parties, urging them to reconsider their actions. “Any religious leader who takes sides and hence only preaches against a particular political party is not genuine, period,” he declared.
