The debate over whether a Catholic can also be a Freemason resurfaced in Ghana recently, igniting fresh discussions within the Church and the public sphere. At the center of the controversy is Honourable Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament, who declared his dual affiliation with both Catholicism and Freemasonry.
In response, the Episcopal Conference of Ghana reaffirmed the Church’s unwavering stance, stating that one can’t be a Catholic and a Freemason at the same time. The Conference later announced that it would send a delegation to meet the MP over the matter.
During the vetting of Hon. John Dumelo, Deputy Minister Designate for Agriculture this week, Hon. Afenyo-Markin suggested that the Catholic Church had lodges similar to the Freemasonry.
In the interview below, Catholic Trends has been following up on the planned meeting of the Bishops with the Minority leader. Also featured in the much talked about National Catholic Television Project (Lumen Christi TV). We spoke with Most Rev. Matthew Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
