The Catholic Diocese of Yola has confirmed the abduction of two of its priests, Rev. Fr. Matthew David Dutsemi of the Diocese of Yola and Rev. Fr. Abraham Saummam of the Diocese of Jalingo, in the early hours of Saturday, February 22, 2025.
In an official statement signed by Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Dami Mamza, Bishop of Yola Diocese, the Church expressed deep concern over the incident and called on the faithful to join in prayer for their safe return.
“In light of the recent events, it is with a heavy heart and deep concern that I must bring to your attention the distressing news of the unprovoked kidnapping of Rev. Fr. Matthew David Dutsemi of the Catholic Diocese of Yola and Rev. Fr. Abraham Saummam of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo in the early hours of today, February 22nd, 2025,” the statement said.
The priests were abducted from the Priests’ Rectory in Gweda-Mallam, located in Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Nigeria. According to the statement, the attack was carried out by armed kidnappers who arrived at the rectory in the early hours of the day.
“According to reports from neighbours, armed kidnappers arrived at the Parish Rectory during the early hours of Saturday, armed with offensive weapons, and proceeded to abduct the Clerics,” the Diocese stated.
Bishop Mamza urged the faithful, clergy, and religious communities to turn to prayer during this difficult time, asking for divine intervention for the priests’ safe release.
“During this challenging and distressing time, we humbly seek your prayers for the safety and swift release of these two dedicated Priests from their captors,” he said.
