Pope Francis has established a new commission to spearhead global fundraising efforts in support of the Holy See’s mission and charitable projects.
The Commissio de donationibus pro Sancta Sede, created through a Chirograph signed on February 11, 2025, will promote donations from the faithful, bishops’ conferences, and other benefactors. The initiative aims to strengthen the Church’s capacity to finance humanitarian work and pastoral projects.
The commission’s primary role is to coordinate fundraising campaigns that highlight the importance of financial support for the Church’s mission of charity and evangelization. It will also seek funding for specific projects proposed by Roman Curia institutions and the Governorate of Vatican City.
By acting as a central coordinating body, the commission will align efforts like Peter’s Pence and Canon 1271 contributions while respecting the autonomy of individual Vatican departments.
Monsignor Roberto Campisi, Assessor for General Affairs at the Secretariat of State, will chair the five-member commission. Other members include:
- Archbishop Flavio Pace, Secretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity
- Sister Alessandra Smerilli, Secretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development
- Sister Silvana Piro, Undersecretary of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See
- Lawyer Giuseppe Puglisi-Alibrandi, Deputy Secretary General of the Governorate of Vatican City
Together, they will identify funding priorities, assess submitted projects, and set annual fundraising strategies to inspire generosity among the faithful.
The commission will not only coordinate existing initiatives but also create reserve funds for future projects if no immediate needs are presented. An implementation plan is expected within three months, ensuring that the Vatican’s fundraising efforts align with its commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship.
