Young Catholics in Ghana have been called to take bold and practical steps in protecting the environment, following Pope Francis’ appeal in Laudato Si for the care of creation.
Speaking at the opening of the Accra Provincial Study Session in Accra, Augustine Senyo Dargbey, Chairperson of the Archdiocesan Youth Council, urged Catholic youth to see environmental stewardship as a faith-driven responsibility. He described the earth as “our beautiful home that God has given us, crying out for care.”
Themed “Laudato Si: Caring for Our Common Home,” this year’s study session is anchored in Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical, which calls for ecological conversion and sustainable living. The four-day event, hosted by the Accra Archdiocese, has brought together young Catholics from six dioceses within Ghana’s Accra Province, namely: Koforidua, Ho, Keta-Akatsi, Jasikan, the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom, and the host, Accra Archdiocese.
Organizers have promised an engaging and impactful program, providing a platform for participants to exchange ideas, share experiences, and foster unity. Discussions will focus on Laudato Si and pressing issues affecting young people in the Church and Ghanaian society.
Participants were also challenged to ensure that the insights and commitments made during the study session translate into concrete environmental projects in their Archdioceses, Dioceses, and Vicariates.
The 2025 Study Session ultimately seeks to empower young Catholics in Ghana to be catalysts for change leading efforts to protect creation, promote sustainability, and live out the Gospel values of stewardship and responsibility.
