In response to the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar’s Mandalay region on March 28, the Archdiocese of Tokyo has launched a fundraising campaign to support the victims of the disaster.
The earthquake, which caused significant damage near the epicenter, has left many in urgent need of relief, especially in the already vulnerable areas affected by political unrest and ongoing conflict.
The Archdiocese of Tokyo has long partnered with the Diocese of Cologne in supporting the church in Myanmar, particularly through the “Seeds of Hope” project, which aims to provide education and resources for displaced children and those in conflict zones.
This initiative, which has helped build schools and provide educational materials, has brought hope to many. However, the recent earthquake has exacerbated the already dire situation.
“Through the support of the Archdiocese of Tokyo and Cologne, local churches have been able to create educational spaces, provide materials for temporary schools, and offer vital support for volunteers. This work has helped sow the seeds of education in a region struggling with instability,” a statement issued by Archbishop of Tokyo, Cardinal Isao Kikuchi, said.
“However, with the earthquake striking during this already unstable period, the need for urgent support is even greater,” the Caritas international head added.
In light of the crisis, Archbishop Mark of Mandalay has made an urgent appeal for help for those who have been evacuated due to the earthquake’s destruction. Cardinal Kikuchi, recognizing the deep bond between the church in Japan and Myanmar, has called on the faithful of the Archdiocese of Tokyo to contribute to the relief efforts. “Keeping in mind the bond between our communities, we hope to support the Archdiocese of Tokyo in responding to this urgent need,” he said.
To ensure swift and effective aid, the Archdiocese of Tokyo has set up donation points at local parishes. Donations will be accepted between Saturday, April 12th, and April 30th, with contributions collected separately from regular Mass offerings. The funds raised will be sent directly to support the local church in Myanmar through a dedicated Myanmar aid counter.
In addition to supporting relief efforts, the church in Japan, through Caritas Japan, is accepting broader donations for the earthquake victims, helping to provide much-needed assistance to those in the most affected areas.
