Ghana has been plunged into mourning following a tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, which claimed the lives of several prominent figures, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, a devoted Catholic and public servant.
The incident, involving a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter, occurred while the delegation was en route to Obuasi. The aircraft reportedly went off radar before the crash was later confirmed by military and government sources.
Also on board were the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Mr. Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate, and Mr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). All were confirmed deceased.
The crew members who lost their lives in the line of duty were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, a respected physician, communications strategist, and statesman, had only recently been appointed as Minister for Defence. A committed Catholic, he was known for his intellect, humility, and service to the nation and the Church. His passing has left a deep void within the Catholic community and across Ghana’s political landscape.
The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and other Church bodies are expected to issue official tributes in the coming days, as the faithful join in prayer for the repose of the souls of all who perished.
