The Catholic Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi has remembered the late Sr. Jane Chantal Method, CSC, one of the pioneer Sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Cross in Ghana, at a memorial Mass held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Cathedral in Takoradi.

The Eucharistic celebration on October 1, 2026, brought together members of the Diocese and the Holy Cross family to honour Sr. Jane, who dedicated more than 70 years of her life to Consecrated Life and service to others.

Presiding over the Mass, the Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi, Most Rev. John Baptist Attakruh, expressed gratitude to the Holy Cross Sisters for their decades of service to the Diocese and the communities they have served.

In his homily, Bishop Attakruh described Sr. Jane’s life as a profound witness of dedication, obedience and love, highlighting her humility, compassion and commitment to vulnerable people.

“We remember her with profound affection and pay tribute, as a Diocese, to a woman who became a missionary, a faithful servant of the poor. Sr. Jane was one of the pioneer sisters of the Holy Cross congregation who graciously served in the Diocese,” he said.

“Throughout her years of service, her presence, pastoral commitment, and humble witness became a visible and effective instrument of God’s love and a blessing to our local church and the communities she served,” he added.

Among Sr. Jane’s lasting contributions to the Diocese was the establishment of the Damien Center in 1995.

The facility was established to provide mental health care, counselling and support for people struggling with substance abuse, reflecting her commitment to serving people in vulnerable situations.

Tributes from the Diocesan Health Directorate highlighted her compassion, courage and visionary leadership, particularly her role as executive secretary and her contribution to the development of the Diocese’s health ministry.

The Holy Cross Sisters also remembered Sr. Jane for her years of service in Ghana, recalling her arrival in the country in 1989 and her contribution to healing and community building.

Her leadership, they said, was marked by humility, empathy and closeness to the people she served. Sr. Jane remained in Ghana until 2005 before returning abroad. She died on May 7, 2026, at the age of 97.

Letter to the Galatians 3,1-5.

O stupid Galatians! Who has bewitched you, before... whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified?
I want to learn only this from you: did you receive the Spirit from works of the law, or from faith in what you heard?
Are you so stupid? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now ending with the flesh?
Did you experience so many things in vain?--if indeed it was in vain.
Does, then, the one who supplies the Spirit to you and works mighty deeds among you do so from works of the law or from faith in what you heard?

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 1,69-70.71-72.73-75.

He has come to the help of his people and... set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,
Born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 11,5-13.

Jesus said to his disciples: "Suppose... one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,'
and he says in reply from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.'
I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.
And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?
Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
