Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies Ghana to strengthen its nationwide solar energy drive, which aims to power more than 4,000 Catholic institutions across the country.
The agreement, signed in Accra on October 14, builds on an earlier partnership in July 2025 with Letshego Ghana Savings and Loans, which committed GHS200 million in financing under the Bishops’ Green Energy Initiative. While Letshego provides the financial foundation for the project, Huawei is expected to supply solar products, servicing, and monitoring systems to ensure long-term sustainability.
Board Chair of Lumen Energy and Bishop of the Keta-Akatsi Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji S.V.D, described the new agreement as a “milestone in our collective commitment to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and responsible leadership.”

“Today, we are taking a bold step forward to affirm our shared mission to promote renewable energy, address the pressing challenges of climate change, and safeguard our planet for future generations,” he told the gathering.
Highlighting the scale of the initiative, Bishop Kumordji said, “Through this partnership, we are embarking on a transformative solar initiative that will power over 4,000 Catholic institutions across Ghana. These include schools, hospitals, parishes, seminaries, and social centres that serve our communities every single day.”
The project, first launched with Letshego’s financial backing, has been described as one of Ghana’s most ambitious faith-based renewable energy ventures. By bringing Huawei on board, the Bishops’ Conference secures access to advanced solar technology, including inverters, energy storage, and smart monitoring solutions.
“Huawei Technologies stands among the world’s foremost providers of digital power solutions. With cutting-edge technologies in solar inverters, energy storage, smart monitoring, and grid integration, combined with global experience and a strong local presence, Huawei brings excellence, reliability, and innovation to this partnership,” Bishop Kumordji said.
The Bishop further noted that the initiative is also expected to create employment opportunities for the youth of the West African country. “Furthermore, this project will create sustainable jobs and build local capacity, especially for our young people, who will be trained to install, manage, and maintain these systems. It is a long-term investment in both people and the planet,” he said..
The Bishop expressed gratitude to both partners and stakeholders: “We extend our sincere gratitude to Huawei Technologies for your partnership and confidence in this vision. We also thank our consultants, financiers, and dedicated stakeholders who have walked with us on this journey.”
