The Archbishop of Tehran-Isfahan, Dominique Cardinal Joseph Mathieu, has reportedly been evacuated to Rome along with staff of the Italian embassy in Tehran amid escalating tensions in the region.
According to reports, the Belgian-born prelate arrived in Rome on March 8 after leaving Iran as part of the complete evacuation of the Italian embassy. The Latin Catholic Cathedral of the Consolata and the archbishop’s residence are located within the embassy’s compound.
In a message following his arrival, Cardinal Mathieu said he left the country “not without regret and sorrow” for the people and Christian community in Iran, asking for prayers for peace and for the conversion of hearts while awaiting the possibility of returning to his pastoral mission.
The Order of Friars Minor Conventual also confirmed that the cardinal had safely departed Iran during the embassy’s evacuation. Concerns had earlier been raised about his safety after communication with him became difficult following the February 28 attacks involving the United States and Israel against Iran.
Cardinal Mathieu, a Conventual Franciscan, was appointed Archbishop of Tehran-Isfahan in 2021 by Pope Francis and was created cardinal in December 2024. Reports indicate he has been serving as the sole priest responsible for the archdiocese’s five parishes.
The Catholic Church in Iran represents a small minority, with estimates indicating a few thousand Catholics in the country. While Christianity is officially recognized as a religious minority, the Church operates under strict government oversight and Christians often face significant restrictions.
Pope Leo Calls for Peace
Meanwhile, Pope Leo has in recent days used his Angelus addresses to express deep concern over the escalating violence in the region. The Holy Father has lamented the loss of human lives and called for an immediate end to the hostilities.
He has urged all parties involved to pursue dialogue and peaceful solutions, warning that continued violence could further destabilize the region. The pope also called for prayers so that weapons may fall silent and space may be created for sincere and responsible dialogue aimed at restoring peace.
