Ghana’s Ambassador to the Holy See, His Excellency Benedict Batabe Assorow, has reaffirmed the strong relationship between Ghana and the Holy See, describing it as a partnership built on shared values and cooperation in development.
Speaking to members of the Ghanaian community in Rome during celebrations marking Ghana’s 69th independence anniversary at the Collegio San Pietro, the ambassador said the ties between the two states continue to deepen.
“The 15 years of relationship between Ghana and the Holy See has been rooted in shared values of peace, dialogue, the dignity of the human person, and solidarity with the poor and marginalised,” he said.
He noted that Ghana demonstrates the importance it attaches to the relationship through its diplomatic presence in Rome.
“Indeed, Ghana places high premium on its relations with the Holy See as evidenced in the government of Ghana’s decision to open a residential mission here in Rome on, I think, in November 2013.”
Ambassador Assorow also highlighted the role of the Catholic Church in Ghana’s development.
“The contribution of the Holy See to Ghana’s political and socio-economic development cannot be overemphasised,” he said, noting that Catholic institutions and missionary organisations continue to support education, healthcare and peace-building efforts in the country.
The ambassador, who arrived in Rome last October, presented his diplomatic credentials to Pope Leo XIV in November.
He also used the occasion to encourage Ghanaians living abroad to remain positive representatives of their country.
“Your conduct, your unity, and your commitment to whatever you are here to do in Italy are a fine form of patriotism,” he said.
