The West African Priests Association (URPAO/RUPWA) have assured the people of Ghana of their prayers and fraternal solidarity following the devastating floods that have affected Accra and several other communities.
In a message signed by the President of URPAO/RUPWA, Rev. Fr. Peter Alpha Konteh, the association expressed heartfelt concern for all those impacted by the disaster, praying for God’s protection over families in danger and comfort for those who have suffered the loss of property.
The priests also invoked God’s strength for emergency responders and all those working tirelessly to provide relief and restore safety to affected communities.
Reaffirming the Church’s closeness to those who are suffering, the statement said, “We stand with Ghana in prayer, compassion, and fraternity.”
The move comes as heavy rainfall on Monday caused widespread flooding across several parts of the Greater Accra Region, leaving roads impassable, submerging homes and disrupting transportation.
Emergency response efforts have been ongoing in affected communities, with authorities urging residents in flood-prone areas to move to safer locations and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed that nine people died on Monday following the devastating floods in parts of Accra and Tema.
There are indications that the number could increase as rescue and recovery operations continue.
This comes after emergency response teams continue search-and-rescue operations in flood-ravaged communities where residents remain stranded after floodwaters overwhelmed drains and entered homes.
