Pope Leo XIV has received two custom-built electric vehicles to support his future Apostolic Journeys abroad.

Crafted by Italian engineering firm Exelentia in close collaboration with the Gendarmerie Corps of Vatican City State, the compact, fully electric vehicles were officially presented to the Holy Father during a private meeting on 3rd July at the Pontifical Villas in Castel Gandolfo.

According to a 6th July statement from the Governatorate of Vatican City State, the vehicles are “the result of a fusion of engineering design and the high-level mechanical, electronic, manufacturing, and artisanal expertise” of the team behind their development. Designed with portability in mind, both vehicles can be airlifted without being dismantled — a practical feature for international papal visits.

The vehicles emit no noise or pollutants, marking a significant step in the Vatican’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices — a theme close to Pope Leo XIV’s heart.

Each vehicle has been customised to ensure ease and comfort for the Pope. Notably, “the bodywork was customised with the addition of a front handle and lateral supports under the armrests to offer secure grips and improved comfort when boarding and exiting the vehicle.”

The Gendarmerie Corps played a crucial supervisory role throughout the project, ensuring the vehicles meet the highest standards of efficiency, agility, and security. The Holy See’s preferred airline, ITA Airways, also collaborated on the initiative, assisting in defining the technical and dimensional specifications necessary for air transport.
