The Catholic Church in Peru is mourning the death of Bishop Jorge Pedro Carrión Pavlich of Puno, just two days after the death of Archbishop Richard Daniel Alarcón Urrutia of Cusco.
Bishop Carrión, 76, died on Sunday, November 1, at a clinic in Lima, where he had been hospitalised. His death was announced during a Mass at the Shrine of the Virgin of Candelaria in Puno.
His death comes less than two weeks before Pope Leo XIV is expected to visit Peru from November 11 to 16. The Pope is scheduled to visit Cusco, but Puno is not included in the itinerary.
The Peruvian Bishops’ Conference issued a message of condolence following the announcement, expressing solidarity with the Church in Puno, the bishop’s family and the wider Catholic community.
“We join in prayer with the Church of Puno, his family and the entire Catholic community, thanking God for his life and his dedication to the service of the Church,” the bishops said, asking the faithful to pray for his eternal rest and for the consolation of his family.
Bishop Carrión’s death follows that of Archbishop Alarcón, 74, who died on Friday, October 30, after battling cancer. The Archbishop had been involved in preparations for Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Cusco.
Pope Leo, who spent two decades as a missionary in Peru before serving as Bishop of Chiclayo, has expressed sorrow over Archbishop Alarcón’s death.
A wake for Bishop Carrión was held on November 1 at the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Santiago de Surco, Lima. The vigil continues on November 2 in Puno, where his funeral Mass will be celebrated on November 3. He will be buried on November 4 at the cemetery in his hometown of Tarma.
