A former student of Keta Roman Catholic (RC) Mixed Basic School in the Catholic Diocese of Keta-Akatsi has donated a set of modern musical instruments to help strengthen the school’s recently revived brass band.
Mr. Amewode Elikplim presented the instruments to his alma mater during a ceremony held at the school on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The school’s brass band was brought back through the efforts of Mr. Thomas Agbemava and Hon. Amenyo Kwasiga, a former Assemblyman for Kedzikope. Both are old students of the school and were members of staff when they led the revival. Mr. Jonathan Gbedze also supported the initiative by helping to train the pupils with only three musical instruments until Mr. Amewode stepped in with the latest donation.
Welcoming guests, the Head Teacher, Madam Cynthia Vuvor, thanked Mr. Amewode for his generosity and continued commitment to the school. She said the new instruments would play an important role in restoring the school’s former musical excellence.
She also praised the teachers who worked hard to revive the brass band despite having very limited resources.
The school community, including management, staff and pupils, gathered in a joyful atmosphere to witness the presentation.
The donation was officially received on behalf of the school by Rev. Fr. Elikem Akakpo, Chaplain of Keta RC Schools; the Head Teacher, Madam Cynthia Vuvor; the School Management Committee (SMC) Chairman, Mr. Kugbe-ne Geoffrey; and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Chairman, Rev. Adzia Wisdom.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Amewode encouraged fellow old students to support the school’s brass band. He explained that the education he received at Keta RC has shaped his career and inspired him to invest in the next generation.
“The only thing I want to do is to add value to the children,” he said.
Madam Cynthia Vuvor expressed her appreciation to Mr. Elikplim for giving back to the school and supporting the all-round development of its pupils.
She said music plays an important role in co-curricular activities and assured the donor that the instruments would be properly maintained for future generations.
She added that the donation comes at an important time as the Church prepares to climax the 135th anniversary celebrations of the Catholic Mission in Keta.
The highlight of the ceremony was a lively performance by the school’s newly formed brass band.
Using the new instruments for the first time, the pupils delighted guests as they confidently played and sang a selection of newly learned songs. The sound of the new trumpets, together with the rhythm of the band, filled the school with excitement and showed that the revival of the brass band is gathering momentum.
“Seeing the children play with such passion justifies this gesture. Music fosters discipline and teamwork, and I am glad to help revive this legacy,” Mr. Elikplim remarked.
The school leadership, together with the PTA and SMC, expressed their gratitude for the donation, describing it as an important step in Keta RC Mixed Basic School’s efforts to restore its proud tradition of musical excellence.
