The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Bishop Irineu Andreassa, O.F.M., from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Ituiutaba, Brazil, and appointed Bishop Valter Magno de Carvalho as his successor.
Bishop Carvalho, 52, a native of Capela Nova in the state of Minas Gerais, brings with him a rich pastoral and academic background. Until now, he served as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia and held the titular see of Giufi. His episcopal ministry has been marked by close engagement with clergy formation and seminary education.
Ordained a priest in 1997 for the Archdiocese of Mariana, Carvalho has served as seminary rector, diocesan administrator, parish priest, and theology professor. Within the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, he is a member of the Episcopal Commission for Ordained Ministers and Consecrated Life.
Bishop Irineu Andreassa, a Franciscan friar, had led the Diocese of Ituiutaba since 2016. His resignation, in accordance with canon law, was accepted by the Pope upon reaching the age limit or for reasons of health or discernment.
The Diocese of Ituiutaba, located in the ecclesiastical province of Uberaba, now looks to its new shepherd for continuity and renewed pastoral zeal.
