The Holy See Press Office has today announced that Pope Leo XIV has officially approved the conferral of the title Doctor of the Church upon Saint John Henry Newman, the 19th-century English cardinal and convert from Anglicanism whose theological and spiritual writings continue to inspire Catholics worldwide.

The announcement followed an audience granted by the Holy Father to Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. During the meeting, Pope Leo XIV confirmed the unanimous recommendation of the Plenary Session of Cardinals and Bishops of the Dicastery that Newman be added to the distinguished list of Doctors of the Universal Church.

Saint John Henry Newman becomes the first Englishman in over 700 years to be named a Doctor of the Church, joining a revered group of saints recognised for their eminent doctrine and contribution to Catholic theology and spirituality.

Born in 1801, Newman served for many years as an Anglican priest and academic at Oxford before his conversion to Catholicism in 1845. His journey toward Rome was marked by deep intellectual inquiry and spiritual searching, culminating in his landmark theological work, An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, in which he argued for the organic and historical growth of Church teachings.

Following his reception into the Catholic Church, Newman was ordained a Catholic priest and later founded the Birmingham Oratory under the patronage of Saint Philip Neri. In 1879, he was named a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. Upon receiving the news, Newman famously said, “The cloud is lifted forever.”

He died in 1890 and was canonised by Pope Francis in 2019. His chosen motto, Cor ad cor loquitur (“Heart speaks to heart”), has since become emblematic of his understanding of faith as a deeply personal, prayerful, and relational journey with God.

Insight with Bishop Osei-Bonsu: Should the Church reconsider priestly celibacy?

Newman’s poetic writings, including the beloved hymn Lead, Kindly Light, and his emphasis on conscience, personal holiness, and the vital role of the laity, have had a lasting impact on modern Catholic thought. His reflections have shaped conversations on ecumenism, the role of universities in faith formation, and the nature of doctrinal development.

As a Doctor of the Church, Saint John Henry Newman joins the ranks of saints such as Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, underscoring the universal importance and enduring relevance of his teachings.

The Vatican is expected to formally announce the date for the official proclamation ceremony in the coming months.
