St. Charles Lwanga Roman Catholic Basic School at Abeka in the Archdiocese of Accra has marked its Golden Jubilee with a renewed appeal to parents, alumni, the Church, government and the wider community to deepen their partnership in strengthening Catholic education for future generations.
The celebration, held on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, brought together hundreds of parents, students, alumni, clergy, education officials and invited guests under the theme, “Building a Community Based on Education and Innovation: The Role of Stakeholders.”
Reflecting on the school’s 50 year journey, Headmistress of the school, Madam Augustina Kuti described the anniversary as a celebration of “50 years of excellence, service and impact.”
She noted that despite navigating curriculum reforms, resource constraints and other challenges, the school has remained committed to producing learners who combine academic excellence with discipline, Christian values and strong moral character.
Looking ahead, she said the school would continue embracing innovation while staying true to its mission of forming academically competent and morally upright young people capable of making meaningful contributions to society.
The school’s history traces its beginnings to 1975 when buildings at the then St. Matthew Catholic Church were acquired for educational purposes under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Charles Roselein, SVD. Through the commitment of the Parent Teacher Association, parish leadership and the Catholic community, permanent school facilities were later constructed, laying the foundation for the institution’s growth.
Delivering his remarks, the Parish Priest of St. Charles Lwanga Parish, Rev. Fr. Stephen Dogodzi, SVD, said the Golden Jubilee theme highlights the indispensable role every stakeholder plays in the education of children.
He said the Church remains a vital partner in shaping young people through Catholic values, adding that the school’s success over the past five decades has been made possible through the commitment of priests, catechists, teachers, parents, alumni and parishioners.
Drawing inspiration from the school’s patron saint, St. Charles Lwanga, Fr. Dogodzi encouraged the school community to continue forming generations of students distinguished by faith, discipline and integrity.
He prayed that the next 50 years would produce more leaders, transform more lives and strengthen the school’s role as a beacon of hope within the Abeka community.
For his part, a representative of the Catholic Education Unit commended the school for nurturing generations of leaders and expressed confidence that sustained collaboration among stakeholders would keep the institution at the forefront of Catholic education and national development.
Speaking on behalf of the alumni, an old student urged former pupils to remain actively involved in the future of their alma mater through mentorship, technological support, infrastructure development and financial contributions.
He stressed that every stakeholder has a role to play in securing the next chapter of the school’s growth.
Student leaders also pledged to uphold the school’s values of excellence, discipline, leadership and service while building on the legacy of previous generations.
