The Catholic Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Rev. Gabriel Justice Yaw Anokye, has said Ghana’s security should be measured not only by the strength of its institutions but also by the hope offered to young people, the inclusion of vulnerable communities and the trust built between citizens and public institutions.

Speaking at the 2026 National Forum of the Sahel Peace Initiative (SPI) in Accra on July 23, Archbishop Anokye called for stronger early warning systems, greater community resilience and closer collaboration among key stakeholders to protect Ghana from the growing security threats spilling over from the Sahel.

The forum, held under the theme “Spill Over Risk from the Sahel: Assessing Ghana’s Security Preparedness and Early Warning Systems,” brought together government officials, security experts, faith leaders, civil society organisations and development partners to examine Ghana’s preparedness in the face of increasing instability across the sub region.

Archbishop Anokye, who is also the Episcopal Chair for the Governance, Justice and Peace Directorate of the National Catholic Secretariat of Ghana, described the gathering as an important opportunity to strengthen the country’s response to emerging security challenges.

“This forum provides an important opportunity to reflect together on how Ghana can continue to strengthen its early warning systems, reinforce community resilience, and deepen collaboration among state institutions, faith communities, traditional authorities, civil society, and development partners,” he said.

The Archbishop stressed that the Church’s commitment to peace building is rooted in its Gospel mission and the principles of Catholic social teaching.

“For the Catholic Church, peace building is not simply a programme of work. It is part of our Gospel mission,” he said.

He explained that authentic peace is founded on justice, respect for human dignity, solidarity and the pursuit of the common good.

“Security therefore is not measured only by the strength of our institutions but also by the hope we give our young people, the inclusion we extend to vulnerable communities, and the trust we build between citizens and public institutions,” Archbishop Anokye said.

He commended the Government of Ghana and the country’s security agencies for their continued vigilance in safeguarding the nation. He also praised development partners, faith communities and civil society organisations for strengthening social cohesion and promoting peaceful coexistence.

Archbishop Anokye expressed the hope that the forum would produce practical recommendations to improve Ghana’s preparedness while preserving the values that have made the country a peaceful and united nation.

He urged participants to work together with the conviction that “preventing conflict is always better than responding to it.”

Welcoming delegates from Francophone West Africa, the Archbishop thanked them for joining the discussions, describing their presence as a sign of the region’s shared commitment to peace and stability..

The Sahel Peace Initiative was launched in 2019 by the Episcopal Conferences of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire in partnership with Catholic Relief Services. The initiative seeks to make the Church a leading force for peace and social transformation by bringing together spiritual, community and technical efforts to restore hope in communities affected by conflict and instability across the Sahel.

This version puts the Archbishop’s strongest and most distinctive message in the headline while allowing the first paragraphs to naturally introduce the Sahel security context. It also gives the story a clearer Church angle rather than sounding like a general security report.

Monday of the Twentieth week in Ordinary Time

Book of Ezekiel 24,15-24.

Thus the word of the LORD came to me:
Son... of man, by a sudden blow I am taking away from you the delight of your eyes, but do not mourn or weep or shed any tears.
Groan in silence, make no lament for the dead, bind on your turban, put your sandals on your feet, do not cover your beard, and do not eat the customary bread.
That evening my wife died, and the next morning I did as I had been commanded.
Then the people asked me, "Will you not tell us what all these things that you are doing mean for us?" I therefore spoke to the people that morning,
saying to them: Thus the word of the LORD came to me:
Say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord GOD: I will now desecrate my sanctuary, the stronghold of your pride, the delight of your eyes, the desire of your soul. The sons and daughters you left behind shall fall by the sword.
You shall do as I have done, not covering your beards nor eating the customary bread.
Your turbans shall remain on your heads, your sandals on your feet. You shall not mourn or weep, but you shall rot away because of your sins and groan one to another.
Ezekiel shall be a sign for you: all that he did you shall do when it happens. Thus you shall know that I am the LORD.

Book of Deuteronomy 32,18-19.20.21.

You were unmindful of the Rock that begot... you,
you forgot the God who gave you birth.
When the LORD saw this, he was filled with loathing
and anger toward his sons and daughters.
"I will hide my face from them," he said,
"and see what will then become of them.
What a fickle race they are,
sons with no loyalty in them!"
"Since they have provoked me with their 'no-god'
and angered me with their vain idols,
I will provoke them with a 'no-people';
with a foolish nation I will anger them."

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 19,16-22.

A young man approached Jesus and said, "Teacher, what... good must I do to gain eternal life?"
He answered him, "Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."
He asked him, "Which ones?" And Jesus replied, " 'You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness;
honor your father and your mother'; and 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"
The young man said to him, "All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?"
Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to (the) poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
