The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba in Malawi, Rt. Rev. Alfred Mateyu Chaima, has commended the diocesan Catholic Women Association (CWA) for acquiring a 29-seater bus, describing the achievement as a sign of God’s work among his people.

Bishop Chaima made the commendation on Monday, October 12, during a Eucharistic celebration at the Bishop’s House in Zomba, where the bus was blessed and officially handed over to the CWA leadership.

In his homily, the bishop drew parallels between the women’s achievement and the role of women in biblical history, citing Sarah, Hagar and the Blessed Virgin Mary as examples of women through whom God fulfilled his plans.

He encouraged the faithful to remain grateful for God’s presence in their lives, reminding them that great things happen when God works among his people.

Reflecting on the bus acquisition, Bishop Chaima urged the women to look beyond the material achievement and recognise God’s love and providence at work. He called on them to respond through total commitment to God’s will, following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The bishop also encouraged other associations in the diocese to learn from the CWA’s example and urged its leadership to remain visionary and committed to implementing the diocesan strategic plan, which runs until 2028.

The CWA Chaplain, Fr. Michael Mkhomeni, thanked the bishop, clergy and laity for supporting the association in realising its long-standing ambition. He also commended the women for their patience, perseverance and dedication throughout the process.

The association’s Executive Chairperson, Christina Lackion, and Technical Chairperson, Prisca Chirwa, expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the achievement. They encouraged members to remain resourceful and determined despite criticism, while continuing to give thanks to God.

The two leaders also presented a financial report detailing the cost of acquiring the bus.

The CWA in Zomba Diocese operates several income-generating ventures, including hostels and maize mills, to support its activities. The newly acquired bus is expected to further strengthen the association’s finances.

Letter to the Philippians 3,3-8a.

Brothers and sisters: We are the circumcision, we... who worship through the Spirit of God, who boast in Christ Jesus and do not put our confidence in flesh,
although I myself have grounds for confidence even in the flesh.If anyone else thinks he can be confident in flesh, all the more can I.
Circumcised on the eighth day, of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrew parentage, in observance of the law a Pharisee,
in zeal I persecuted the church, in righteousness based on the law I was blameless.
(But) whatever gains I had, these I have come to consider a loss because of Christ.
More than that, I even consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

Psalms 105(104),2-3.4-5.6-7.

Sing to him, sing his praise,
proclaim... all his wondrous deeds.
Glory in his holy name;
rejoice, O hearts that seek the LORD!

Look to the LORD in his strength;
seek to serve him constantly.
Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
his portents, and the judgments he has uttered.

You descendants of Abraham, his servants,
sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!
He, the LORD, is our God;
throughout the earth his judgments prevail.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 15,1-10.

Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing... near to listen to Jesus,
but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them."
So to them he addressed this parable.
"What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it?
And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy
and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.'
I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance."
Or what woman having ten coins and losing one would not light a lamp and sweep the house, searching carefully until she finds it?
And when she does find it, she calls together her friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.'
In just the same way, I tell you, there will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
